Had thought that carpenter bees would be mainly black but this species is an example of the female having a black thorax while the male's is dark yellow from the covering of fine yellow hairs. Understand that they are so named because of a small patch of fine white hairs found behind their eyes in both sexes, but seriously, how to see for an amateur?
